Select An Auto Insurance Company
All car insurance companies offer the same coverages?
Absolutely not. Even though many of the basic coverages— Liability, Collision, Comprehensive,
Medical Payments, Uninsured Motorist, etc. — are offered by companies, discounts
and specialized coverages can vary greatly between companies.
Are auto insurance companies regulated?
Yes. California requires auto insurance companies to file how they calculate customer
rates, and insurers cannot deviate from these filed rates. California also has regulators
who review that information and the rates companies charge.
The California Department of Insurance conducts annual surveys of insurers licensed
to transact insurance in California. The
annual automobile premium survey is based upon a number of scenarios, or
hypothetical risks, that represent the most common variables. The results of these
surveys provide helpful insurance information for consumers and are reasonable indicators
of the differences in premiums charged by insurance companies.
